Some of our brightest young talents in Year 5 attended the annual Academic All Stars event, which was held this year at St Thomas’ in Claremont. Representing St Dominic’s were:
Daniel J
Kieran R
Nick C
Hudson O
Jessica Z
Kate D
Claire S
Noah F
Over the course of the day, students competed in events that tested various academic areas – Poetry, Art, Chess, Engineering, English and Mathematics. As the day progressed, students worked in larger groups for a drama performance, as well as a General Knowledge Quiz.
This year, the Poetry and Art section asked students to develop pieces that matched the theme of ‘chaos and order’. Nick and Jessica created a very detailed artwork, while Kate and Claire wrote a poem based on a courtroom.
Over at the Chess, Daniel and Kieran were meticulous in their approach to Chess, managing to outwit, outplay and outlast a few of their opponents, much like the American TV show Survivor.
Hudson and Noah went off to the Engineering competition, where they had to program robots using a specific set of colour codes. Rumour has it they have both been given the green light to build the new St Dominic’s Early Learning Hub with their fantastic engineering skills.
In the middle section, our students took part in an English and Mathematics challenge, followed by a General Knowledge quiz. With some impressive answers, our students will give their parents a run for their money at the upcoming P & F Quiz Night later on this year.
The final aspect of the day involved the Drama component where students have to advertise a plain box. Our team of Kieran, Nick, Noah and Hudson advertised a multi-purpose box. They definitely swayed me to purchase a few and much to my wife’s frustration, we now have no money to spend on nappies for little Sammy because we have so many multi-purpose boxes in our house.
Overall, we finished 7th out of the 8 schools. Despite the result, we couldn’t be prouder of the way our students conducted themselves and represented St Dominic’s. Well done team!
Please find attached some photos of our students in action.
