On Monday, students in Year 3 to 6 listened to a talk from Professor Clive Walley. Mr Walley, the Director of Indigenous Education at Notre Dame University in Fremantle, came to speak to the students about NAIDOC Week and the importance of recognising the First Nations that inhabited our great land. The talk consolidated the learnings that students took away from the Yirra Yaakin performance in Term 3, which was about how the First Nations used the land sustainably to provide for their future.
The theme of NAIDOC Week this year is Always Was, Always Will Be. This theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
We were amazed at how much our students knew about Aboriginal Culture. Mr Walley made his talk very interactive, with students asking questions and providing answers about a range of topics related to NAIDOC Week. The students learnt about the importance of the Aboriginal Flag, as well as learning how to recite the ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ song in Noongar Language.
Mr Walley’s key message was that no matter the colour of our skin, or where we come from, we are all one. This is the reason why we celebrate NAIDOC Week.
Please find attached below some photos of the talk.
Thanks for coming to visit us, Mr Walley.
