On Thursday, 10th September, all students at St Dominic’s were treated to a performance by the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company called ‘Bilya Kaatijin’.
The performance connected stories from Noongar land (south-west Western Australia) to Wonguktha land (the northern Goldfields), Aotearoa (New Zealand) and the Kikuyu people of Kenya. Bilya Kaatijin taught students about the importance of water to First Nations people around the world.
Journeying through global Dreaming stories, the show also taught our students about the importance of accepting others, the power of empathy and the impact of climate change to the land and the Nonngar seasons. In particular, the values of empathy, inclusivity and caring for our environment are certainly lessons we teach and reinforce everyday here at St Dominic’s.
The production continues Yirra Yaakin’s invovlment in connecting young people and families with important cultural knowledge and stories about our region. Yirra Yaakin is committed to sharing important messages of caring for country, environmental sustainability and cultural awareness, which again are all values that came through in the performance.
The incursion was also a great way to consolidate on the Water Corporation Incursion that our Year 3 to 6 students participated in a few weeks ago, where they learnt about the importance of water in Aboriginal culture.
Please find attached some photos of the incursion.
